Don condemns abuse of impeachment process

A Professor of Political Science at Babcock University, Diji Aina, has condemned the rate at which impeachment processes were instigated against the executive arm of government by the legislature in the country.
The don made this observation on Thursday in Abeokuta while addressing returning and legislators-elect of the Ogun State House of Assembly in a seminar ahead of the May 29 inauguration.
The seminar was organised by the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria Commission.
Aina, who spoke on the topic entitled, “Legislature and sustenance of democracy in Nigeria,” stressed that the concept of impeachment had been abused in the country.
He said, “We must consign to the dustbin of history the idea in the past that anytime the legislature disagrees with the executive, especially with the speaker, the next thing is to threaten impeachment.
“Impeachment as a tool of legislative business today has been grossly abused to the point where if the wife of a president, governor or speaker abuses lawmakers, they respond by initiating an impeachment process.”
Aina, therefore, advised the legislators to see their role as complementary and not antithetical to the executive arm of government.
The don urged them to join the fight against corruption and defend regional agenda.
The state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mrs. Abimbola Akeredolu, in her speech, said their tenure would only be meaningful if they fulfilled their campaign promises to the masses.
She pointed out that the success or otherwise of any democratic setting was dependent on the actions and inactions of the parliamentarians.
The representative of the DAWN commission in the state, Mr. Lanre Banjo, said the body is a programme management institution set up by the six South-West states.
Banjo said that the objective of the commission was to make evolutionary idea for the progress of the region.
The Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Suraj Adekunbi, promised that the 8th legislature would enact laws that would be beneficial to the people of the state.
