It’ll take Nigeria time to stop Boko Haram –Campbell

former United States of America Ambassador to Nigeria, John Campbell
A former United States of America’s Ambassador to Nigeria, John Campbell, has said that the ongoing insurgency by Boko Haram remains a great challenge for the newly elected President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
According to Campbell, who drew the country’s ire with his book, ‘Nigeria: Dancing on the brink’ published in 2010 believed to have predicted that the country would disintegrate in 2015, the country’s security and economic challenges will take a long time to overcome.
He said, “Nigeria’s challenges are great: Boko Haram and a huge population of internally displaced, a potential renewal of an insurrection in the oil patch, ubiquitous corruption, falling oil prices, labour unrest, and generally, a people by and large alienated from their government and their elites. President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed for patience from the Nigerian people. It remains to be seen whether they will give it to him. Nigeria’s challenges will be there tomorrow and for long after.”
President Buhari had in his 2015 presidential election campaign promised that he would step up the fight against Boko Haram and widespread corruption in the country. Buhari repeated this promise in his inaugural speech on Friday.

Allah is involved in politics - Osinbajo

Prof. Yemi Osinbajo
Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has dismissed concerns that religious leaders should not be involved in politics.
Osinbajo, in an interview with Sahara TV on Saturday, which was monitored by our correspondent, was responding to a Twitter post by a Nigerian which read, “The combination of religion and politics is sinful and not the work of God.”
But Osinbajo, who is also a Senior Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, said from the beginning of time, the choice of national leaders had always been the work of God.
“I think that people make a mistake. God has always been involved in the politics of nations. There is no time that God was not involved in the politics of a nation. God has always sought good leaders.
“That is why the scripture says when the righteous are in power, the people rejoice. God has always been interested in good leaders and if you look at it, in everything that God has done, He has always tried to appoint good leaders.
“In fact, when the children of Israel in the Bible wanted a king, God told them that this is how this king will behave but they insisted: ‘We don’t want your choice. This is the one we want.’ God even said, ‘You are rejecting my choice.’ That shows that God has always been interested in leadership.”
When asked if he and his principal, President Muhammadu Buhari, would continue the programmes introduced by the administration of the immediate past President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, Osinbajo also said it will depend on a case-by-case review.
He said, “Government is a continuum; there are many things that are going on that will continue, but one can only deal with these things on a case-by-case basis. It would be very difficult to say whether we are going to adopt those policies or not. We will have to review policies as we go along.
“One thing that is very important is that we will be a transparent and open government. This is a government that will not tolerate corruption.”

Ekiti State Governor, Fayose pays 19 APC lawmakers’ salaries

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose
There are indications that the embattled 19 members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly of the All Progressives Congress extraction have been paid their outstanding salaries and allowances by the state government.
SUNDAY PUNCH investigations revealed that the lawmakers led by the embattled Speaker, Dr. Adewale Ominrin were paid the said allowances sometime last week.
The development, sources told SUNDAY PUNCH, was a fallout of the peace meeting the lawmakers held with Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
The agreement between the warring parties according to sources is that once the lawmakers are paid their outstanding allowances, they will sheathe their sword and jettison their plan to impeach the governor.
The struggle for the soul of the state by the two parties had nearly paralysed the state with both of them threatening to deal with each other.
However, sources disclosed to SUNDAY PUNCH that there is apprehension that the truce may suffer a setback with the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday.
There are concerns that the party might want to use federal might to unseat the governor who was a pain in the neck during campaigns for the president, who was the APC candidate though a court had earlier ordered the warring parties to maintain the status quo.
The Chief Judge of Ekiti State, Justice Ayodeji Daramola, has yet to constitute a panel to investigate the allegations of impunity, violence, stalking and other constitutional breaches raised against the duo.
Omirin, had in an April 9 letter directed the CJ to raise a seven-man panel to investigate the allegations within seven days of receipt of the letter.
But barely six days to the end of the life of the Assembly, the CJ has yet to raise the panel as directed.
Checks by SUNDAY PUNCH revealed that the APC lawmakers had decided to keep mum on their next line of action with the transition of power to Buhari.
Fayose was accused of spearheading a hate campaign against Buhari in favour of former President Goodluck Jonathan, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the March 28 presidential election.
Both parties have, however, refused to comment on the development. It was learnt that both parties had agreed not to speak to the press on the matter so as to keep it from the public domain.
When contacted on Saturday, Omirin refused to reply to inquiries from our correspondent on the impeachment saga.
However, one of the lawmakers who spoke on condition of anonymity, said there was a directive from the party’s national leadership not to speak to journalists about the development.
He, however, said the legislators did not believe that the governor was seeking a genuine reconciliation with them based on the outcome of the peace meeting held in Akure last week.
Asked to comment on insinuations that they have been paid, he said, “That is a lie. You don’t know Ayo (governor)? Do you think he is ready to pay anybody?”
When contacted on Friday, Fayose said he was not afraid of impeachment as the people of Ekiti were solidly behind him.
Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, the governor said, “The APC lawmakers should be asked if we have been faithful so far. As for us, we are fulfilling our own part of the bargain.”
The governor also denied bribing anybody, saying he was seeking a true reconciliation in the interest of the state.
“We did not bribe anybody. We are for peace and that is why the governor honoured their invitation to attend a meeting in Akure. It is the APC lawmakers that should be asked if they will reciprocate the gesture.”
The state’s APC chapter refused to speak about the development on Saturday.
The Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatubosun, did not answer calls placed to his telephones.
But his counterpart in the PDP, Mr. Joseph Adaraniwon, said the governor had no impeachment proceedings against him by law.
“Omirin has for long ceased to be the Speaker. Hon. Dele Olugbemi is the Speaker of the Assembly. So, Omirin lacked the authority to commence anything on behalf of the lawmakers.
“In a Nigeria where the constitution and law operate, the governor has no fears at all because the plot against him is illegal and unconstitutional.”

I have not banned Jonathan’s ministers from travelling abroad - PMB (Buhari)

President Muhammadu Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday said no law abiding Nigerian has been banned from travelling outside the country.
Buhari was reacting to reported cases of VIP stoppages at the nation’s airports. The matter was brought to his attention on Saturday.
A statement signed by the Head, President Muhammadu Buhari Media team, Mallam Garba Shehu said, “Officials of past administrations including ministers, are entitled to their full rights and privileges under the constitution and must not be subjected to any undue harassment and intimidation at the airports or at other points of entry and exit.” It quoted Buhari as saying, “We have not banned anyone from travelling,”
President Buhari subsequently directed all agencies under the government to run their affairs in full compliance with extant rules, regulations and the constitution of the country.
Buhari said, “Unless otherwise directed by the courts, no law-abiding citizens should be barred from travelling abroad.
“We must treat fellow citizens with courtesy and respect. Officials at the borders and other points of entry and exit should conduct their affairs in strict compliance with due process. No one has my permission to bar anyone from travelling abroad.”
