In the Valentine day robber to spend 21 years in jail

LAGOS—A bus  conductor, Sunday Olalekan, was, yesterday, sentenced to 21 years imprisonment by a Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja, after being found guilty of robbing one Nkong Remi on February 14, 2013 (Valentine Day).
The convict, 22, who lives at Papa Unity Road, Imedu-Ibafo area of Ogun State, was arraigned by Lagos State Government on a one-count charge of robbery, to which he pleaded not guilty.
Olalekan was alleged to have, on the said date at Gani Fawehinmi Garden, Ojota, in the Ikeja Judicial Division, robbed the victim (Remi) of her handbag, phones and other valuables.
According to the prosecutor, Mr. Akin George, the offence was contrary to Section 294 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
During trial, Remi had told the court that she was driving an ash-coloured SUV on February 14, on her way to drop her sister at the park around 6:15a.m., when the robbery took place.
She said the assailants also robbed her sister, rough handled and fondled her before she could drive off.
She said: “I returned to the park around 7a.m., and was told some boys were caught and taken to Alausa Police Station.
“At the station, they asked me if I can recognise the boys and I said I can recognise the one with a swollen eye. They took me in and I recognised him (convict).”
However, the convict, who testified in Yoruba language, denied all the allegation.
He said he went to 7-Up at Ojota to wait for his boss (Tunde), but did not see him.
Delivering judgment, Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye held that the testimony of Remi was unshaken during cross-examination and she was able to identify the assailant (Olalekan).
“I, hereby, find you, Sunday Olalekan, guilty of the offence of robbery and sentence you to 21 years imprisonment as stated by law,” the judge ruled.
