Lagos—A quality control operative, Mohammed Umar,
attached to the Polygraph Unit of the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC) yesterday told an Ikeja High Court that a court
registrar, Oluronke Rosolu, was deceptive during a polygraph examination
conducted to determine if she lied about her involvement in a $330,000
fraud carried out on former Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi.
Rosolu, who is a former registrar to Justice Joseph Oyewole, was accused of aiding a Lagos socialite, Fred Ajudua, to defraud the former Chief of Army Staff (Lt-Gen. Bamaiyi) while they were being remanded at Kirikiri Maximum Prison for separate criminal charges between November 2004 and June 2005.
The anti-graft agency said Ajudua obtained the money from Bamaiyi by claiming it represented the professional fee charged by Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) to handle his case.
Ajudua is also alleged to have claimed that the money would help to facilitate Bamaiyi’s release from jail.
Led in evidence by the EFCC counsel Mr. Seidu Atteh, the witness explained that a polygraph test is not a lie detector but detects deception.
“Deception is a polygraph terminology where the examinee is not being truthful during the examination,” Umar said.
The witness told the court that he studied the video recording of the polygraph examination and other documents and was able to determine that the examinee was being deceptive during the polygraph examination.
Umar, who further told the court that he has a diploma in psycho-physiological detection of deception, and a member of the American Polygraph Association, said Rosolu’s polygraph examination was not the first of its kind conducted by his team.
During cross-examination by the defence counsel, Mr Bamidele Ogundele, the witness said that his team did not carry out a polygraph test on Lt. Gen Ishaya Bamaiyi and a prison official ACP Abdullahi Garba to determine if they were lying against the defendant.
After listening to the witness, the presiding judge, Justice Lateef Lawal- Akapo, adjourned the matter till June 23, 2015.
