Businessmans arraigned for careless driving, manslaughter in Lagos

Lagos – A 58-year-old businessman, Momodu Oyakhamoh, was on Monday charged in an Oshodi Magistrates’ Court Lagos, for allegedly crushing a pedestrian to death with his vehicle.
Oyakhamoh, a resident of No. 8, Esado St., Olodi-Apapa, Ajegunle, Lagos, is being tried for careless driving and manslaughter.
The Prosecutor, Cpl. Kehinde Olatunde, told the court that the accused committed the offences on May 5, at Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Oshodi, Lagos.
He said that the accused, who was the driver of a Nissan Pathfinder Jeep with registration number FST568 CL caused the death of 26-year-old Mr Korede Anishere.
“The accused drove his car in a dangerous manner and crushed the victim to death,’’ the prosecutor said.
Olatunde said that the accused was coming from Anthony to Oshodi Oke, where he wanted to negotiate a bend but his vehicle developed a defective brake and lost control, resulting in the accident.
“He lost total control and rammed into unspecified number of pedestrians who were rushed to various hospitals for medical attention in which one of the victims died,’’ he said.
The prosecutor said that the accused also hit a Honda Accord jeep belonging to one Mr Ona Enyle.
“The accused rammed into a Honda in front of him with heavy force and the car somersaulted and fell into the pit, the driver lost consciousness and was rushed to the hospital.’’
According to the prosecutor, the offence, contravened Section 227 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 227 prescribes a life-jail term as penalty for offenders.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the offences and the Magistrate, Mr Akeem Fashola granted him bail of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sums.
Fashola said that the surety must be a blood relation of the accused.
He ordered that the case file be duplicated and forwarded to the director of public prosecutions for legal advice.
Fashola adjourned the case to June 8, for mention. (NAN)
