Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode,
yesterday announced the approval for upward review of the Group Life Insurance
scheme for officers of the Nigeria Police Force in the state. He also declared
a zero tolerance for domestic violence in the state.
Addressing police officers at the Nigeria Police
Command, Ikeja ,the governor said the review was in line with his
administration’s aim of ensuring life was easier and simpler for the residents.
“I will do whatever is required to achieve it”.

The scheme was introduced by the state government 16
years ago to complement the Federal Government’s contributory scheme, to cover
death and permanent disability the police often suffer while securing the
state.
He said, “In fulfillment of our resolve to sustain,
improve and consolidate on past attainment, I am pleased to announce the upward
review of the compensation value as follows: Senior Police officers-N5 million,
Inspectors-N3 million and Rank and File-N2 million respectively.”
The previous compensation value was at N2 million for
Senior Police officers, Inspectors-N1.5 million and Rank and File-N1 million.
The governor stressed that this would further
complement the effort of the central government to improve security in the
state.
On domestic violence, Ambode said, “I am committing
myself and the government of Lagos State to ensure that women and children are
protectedin Lagos.”
Earlier, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kayode
Aderanti assured the governor of the police adequate support to achieve a crime
free state, adding “the nexus between security and business cannot be
separated.”
Ambode hints of plans to convene traffic summit
Also Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday hinted of plans to
convene a summit in the next few weeks to deliberate on traffic gridlocks in
the state.
The Governor spoke at an interactive session he had
with Media Executives alongside his Deputy, Dr (Mrs) Oluranti Adebule and
Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tunji Bello.
He said traffic gridlocks which have become an
integral part of areas like Apapa, Lekki, and others would be decisively dealt
with after the stakeholders’ summit where experts would proffer solution to the
thorny issue that has resulted in the collapse of businesses in Apapa.
“The solution is not restricted to only Alausa, there
are so many people who have ideas that we can buy from. The Traffic Summit is
the first of its kind because we are now dealing with practical issues”.
